I know you are probably just getting back from a long day at work after having a four-day weekend here in the U.S. At least it is going to be a short week, right? The first day back after a holiday is always the worst, if you ask me.
If it helps brighten your day at all, I just have to share with you a book that came out today that I was excited to get from our friends at NetGalley and HarperAudio Adult, Hit or Miss by Elle Kelk. I was lucky enough to get the audiobook, and this new adult college romance is perfect for back to school. It has dual POV, he falls first, a love triangle, and it features my favorite sport, soccer!
Hit or Miss centers on Mia, a transfer student fresh off the plane and out of the Uber from South Carolina. She is attending Hemden University in the UK for her junior year. As she gets out of the Uber, she realizes she is in the wrong spot. It is fine, she will just make the 10-minute trek to her dorm. She grabs her bags, holds her head high, and starts to walk over, only to face-plant after tripping over another student’s bag!
She is introduced to the group of students and comes into contact with Oliver. Oliver is everything Mia thinks she wants in a guy. He is good-looking, plays guitar, and is an English major. Plus, that British accent. How can she resist? As an apology, Alice from the group of students invites her to the Union, and Mia agrees, just after she drops her bags off.
Across campus, Ethan is getting dropped off by his parents. He is also in Carpenter House, and he does not have much with him. His parents drop him off in his single room before quickly rushing out to care for his brother after an accident. He offers to show them around campus, but they are leaving right away. It is like they could not get out of there fast enough.
Mia drops off her bags, changes, and chats with her mom, again, only to run right into Ethan, the former captain of Marshall College’s soccer team. What are the odds that they place them in the same dorm? They are both transfer students from the same school! This was supposed to be her fresh start. She wanted to get away from Marshall, start over, and have some separation from her parents. This is going to be an interesting year.
Narrators Christopher Doucette and Ariel Goodman bring this cast of characters to life, along with a great group of side characters. They do a spectacular job voicing Mia and Ethan with their American accents, as well as the British accents of Alice, Oliver, and the rest of the friends. They switch from one accent to another seamlessly, and it never brought me out of the story thanks to their skills.
This is a new adult novel, but do not let that deter you. There are a lot of spicy scenes in this story. The reason I am giving this story four stars is that I wish soccer played more of a role in the storyline, since Ethan obviously has a love for it. I did, however, love that it was set in England. If anywhere is going to take their soccer seriously, it is there.
Also, I get that Mia was not in the same circle as Ethan, but I think she would have heard about a soccer player being hurt, so I found it a little far-fetched that she knew nothing about what happened to Ethan or his brother.
Overall, it was a good story. If you are a fan of Off Campus, new adult romances, or sports romance, you will probably enjoy Hit or Miss. I suggest the audiobook because of how well Christopher and Ariel did, and you can pick this one up now from your favorite retailer.
