Book Review: Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Happy Monday, Bookish friends!

This week, I’m beyond excited to bring you my review of Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert, the latest installment in her Dark Olympus series. If you’ve been following this series like I have, you’ll know that it’s a dark, modern reimagining of Greek mythology with a plethora of spice and intrigue. Sweet Obsession picks up right where Dark Restraint left off, so if you haven’t read the earlier books, I highly recommend starting there. Trust me, you’ll want the full context to truly appreciate the overall plot of this story.

Well, my friends, This book focuses on Poseidon and Icarus, two characters who couldn’t be more different yet find themselves irresistibly drawn to one another. Icarus may be a prisoner in Poseidon’s hands, but could it really be that simple? You know the answer to that is no.

I will say that Poseidon surprised me—he’s not as dark or brooding as I expected. Instead, he’s quiet, no-nonsense, and deeply committed to his people. Icarus keeps saying he’s a good man, but is he? You’ll have to read and draw your own conclusions. On the other hand, Icarus undergoes significant growth throughout the novel. He is no longer under his father’s thumb, so this is the first time we get to see who Icarus is without his father’s plans for Olympus. His vulnerability and resilience make him a compelling character to root for, even as he struggles with his circumstances.

One of the standout elements of this book is its focus on the overall plot of the series. While previous installments in the Dark Olympus series leaned heavily into the spice, Sweet Obsession feels more balanced- My estimate is about 70% plot and 30% spice. But, with Olympus on the brink of war and Circe threatening its gates, it was time to move the plot forward. The tension builds beautifully as Poseidon grapples with his allegiances and his growing feelings for Icarus. The political intrigue and action-packed moments kept me hooked from start to finish, and I think you will be hooked as well.

That said, I did find myself wishing for a bit more heat between Poseidon and Icarus. Their chemistry is undeniable, but given the high stakes and pace of the plot, their intimate moments felt a bit sparse compared to what we’ve come to expect from this series. Still, their connection is heartfelt and adds depth to their individual arcs.

So, to sum it all up, my bookish friends, Sweet Obsession is a fantastic addition to the Dark Olympus series. It moves the overarching plot forward in significant ways while delivering an emotional and satisfying romance between two unlikely allies. With Olympus teetering on collapse and new alliances forming, it feels like we’re nearing the endgame for this series—and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds. While I would have loved a bit more spice between Poseidon and Icarus, the rich storytelling and character development more than make up for it. If you’re a fan of modern mythology retellings with high stakes and complex relationships, this book—and this series—is a must-read.

Until next time, my friends! Grab a copy, snuggle up in your favorite place to read, grab a cup of coffee (or maybe something iced if spring has already sprung where you are), and happy reading!
