Book Review: Pucking Around by Emily Rath

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5/5 stars)

Happy Monday, Bookish friends! It’s Thanksgiving week here in the US, which means some of you will be with your families looking for a way to make it through the visit. May I suggest a pair of Bose Ultra Open Earbuds and Pucking Around on Audiobook? These headphones mean you can listen to your next audiobook and still hear what’s going on around you—perfect for holidays with the family. I have these and LOVE them.

Anyway, this week, I dove into the captivating world of Pucking Around by Emily Rath. Shout-out to Libby and my local library, and let me tell you, it was just what I needed to warm up on a cold November night! If you’re a fan of hockey boys or polyamory stories with a hefty dose of spice, then this book is a must-read. I also recommend checking out That One Night and Pucking Ever After Volume 1, the prequel and extended storylines, for some added story and context.

Now, friends, I am new to Emily Rath after following her on TikTok, so you may have been a fan for a while, but man, can this author craft a story that beautifully explores the complexities of love and relationships. One of my favorite characters has to be Jake. His insecurities make him incredibly relatable and endearing. Watching him navigate his feelings and vulnerabilities added so much depth to the story. Then there’s Caleb, whose unrequited love for Jake adds another layer of emotional tension. His relationship with Rachael is both tender and complicated, making their dynamic fascinating to follow.

And let’s not forget Ilmari, whose serious nature provides a perfect counterbalance to the more tumultuous aspects of the story. His presence adds a grounding force to the group, which they so obviously need.

The polyamorous relationships in Pucking Around are portrayed with a sense of realism to me and shows the beauty and challenges that come with every relationship. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and the romantic scenes are as steamy as they come.

On the spice scale, this book definitely earns a 5/5!

Overall, I give Pucking Around 4.5 stars. The characters and watching their individual and group relationships develop kept me hooked from start to finish. If you’re looking for a book that combines romance, drama, and a touch of humor, this one should be at the top of your list. So until next time, my friends, grab your favorite cozy blanket, a nice hot cocoa, and settle in for some steamy reading- or listening!
