Book Review: Interesting Facts About Space by Emily Austin

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Hey, fellow bookworms! This evening, I’m here to share my thoughts on Emily Austin’s novel, “Interesting Facts about Space.” I wasn’t sure I was even going to add this book but I felt you all deserved to know when I pick up a not so great read as well. So strap in as we blast off into a world of quirky characters, fast-paced storytelling, and some unexpected twists and turns along the way. So, here’s what this cosmic adventure has in store!

Now friends, before we launch into the nitty-gritty, let’s talk about that two-star rating. Yep, you heard me right. I’m giving this book a modest two stars, and here’s why. While “Interesting Facts about Space” promises a fast-paced and hilarious ride, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me in terms of hopefulness and humor.

Our protagonist, Enid’s character has an obsession for space and a fear of bald men. She’s navigating the complexities of serial dating, an addiction to true crime podcasts, and the challenge of forming new relationships with her estranged half-sisters. But despite her quirks, I struggled to connect with Enid on a deeper level. Her quirkiness often felt forced, and I found myself wanting more depth and relatability from her character.

While the writing itself is solid and there are no glaring plot holes, I found myself struggling to stay engaged with the story. Enid’s paranoia and mounting suspicion added a layer of tension, but it wasn’t enough to hold my attention throughout the entire book. I found myself tempted to DNF multiple times, hoping for some redeeming quality to emerge, but unfortunately, it never materialized.

However friends, I will give credit where credit is due. Austin’s writing style is sharp and witty, and she does a commendable job of weaving together the narrative. The premise of revealing our secret shames and embracing our most human parts is certainly compelling, but I couldn’t help feeling that something was missing in the execution.

So friends, while “Interesting Facts about Space” may not have been the book for me, it might still appeal to readers who enjoy quirky characters and unconventional storytelling. So, if you’re in the mood for a fast-paced read with a quirky main character, it may be worth giving this book a shot. After all, as Enid would say, the universe is vast and full of surprises. Happy reading, everyone!
