Book Review: A Winter in New York by Josie Silver

My Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hey there, book fellow lovers! Today, I’m beyond excited to share my review on Josie Silver’s latest novel, “A Winter in New York.” As a fan of her previous work, I couldn’t wait to dive into this heartwarming tale set in the bustling streets of the Big Apple in the winter. So friends, Let’s chat about why this book left me feeling all the feels and why it’s worth a solid 4 stars in my book!

First off, let me just say that if you’re in the mood for a cozy read filled with love, loss, and delicious gelato, then this is the book for you. I fully expect that if you are anything like me you will have moments that make you giggle and some that make you shed a tear. Silver has a way of weaving together intricate stories that tug at your heartstrings, and “A Winter in New York” is no exception.

Our protagonist, Iris, is embarking on a journey to restart her life in the city that never sleeps after escaping an abusive relationship across the pond. But as anyone who’s ever tried to make it in New York can attest, the Big Apple isn’t always as glamorous as it seems in the movies. I could relate to Iris’s feelings of being overwhelmed by the sheer size and chaos of the city, even with her new best friend Bobby by her side.

One of the things I loved most about this book is the meet cute between Iris and Gio, the handsome gelato shop owner. There’s something magical about the way Silver brings these two characters together, especially considering their shared history. It feels like fate. Plus there is a moment where the author is letting us in on a little secret, and it made me root for Iris and Gio’s budding romance even more. When you pick up the story you’ll know what I mean.

But friends, you know it’s far from sunshine and rainbows in Iris’s world these days. She’s grappling with feelings of loneliness, an abusive ex, and the loss of her mother, which adds a layer of depth to her character that I found incredibly relatable. It’s easy to cheer for Iris when she stands up for others and navigates the complexities of family and love.

The gelato shop itself becomes a character in its own right, and Silver’s descriptions of the mouthwatering flavors had me craving a scoop (or two). The secret family recipe adds an element of intrigue to the story, and as Iris helps Gio and his family recreate the flavors of her childhood, she finds herself falling not only for him but his whole family, in more ways than one.

But of course, no love story is without its obstacles, and when Gio’s uncle comes home from the hospital, all of the secrets Iris has been keeping threaten to unravel everything she’s built. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions that had me flipping through the pages until the very end.

So friends, “A Winter in New York” is a must read that will warm your heart on even the coldest of winter days. While it may not have been a perfect 5-star read for me, it’s definitely worth picking up if you’re in the mood for a charming winter romance with a side of vanilla gelato. So grab a cozy blanket, grab a latte, and get ready to fall in love with Iris and Gio’s story. Happy reading everyone!
