Book Review: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hello, to all my reading pals! Happy Sunday! I hope you are getting the chance to relax today, hopefully with a good read. Today, I want to tell you about my latest read “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus. I’m handing out a solid 4 stars to this gem that’s equal parts witty, scientific, and at times hilarious. But first, let me tell you why this book left a mark on me.

Now friends, if you’re like me and recently indulged in the Apple TV series based on this novel, you might be wondering, “Should I still read the book?” The answer is a resounding yes! While the show provides a fantastic visual experience, Garmus’s writing adds a layer of depth and detail that’s an absolute must for any reader. Some details are not in the TV show and I’m sure you want to experience this story as it was originally meant to be told, and that’s in book form.

Our protagonist, Elizabeth Zott, is a force of nature. A chemist in the 1960s with a razor-sharp wit and an unapologetic approach to life, she’s the kind of character that lingers in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page. Her journey through the male-dominated world of science, paired with her dry humor and resilience, makes for a captivating storyline.

One of the highlights of “Lessons in Chemistry” is the way Garmus effortlessly weaves scientific concepts into the story. Don’t worry friends, you don’t need to understand chemistry to enjoy this book, I know I don’t. Garmus strikes the perfect balance, making the science accessible and even adding a touch of humor to it. You’ll even find yourself chuckling at Elizabeth’s antics while secretly learning a thing or two about chemical reactions. Not that Elizabeth Zott would understand why you’re chuckling.

The supporting cast in this novel is equally charming. From Elizabeth’s unconventional relationships to the quirky colleagues and unexpected friendships, Garmus populates the story with a diverse and memorable cast. While I will say this is more a story about 6:30 than any other character besides Elizabeth Zott herself, each character adds a unique flavor to the narrative, creating a vibrant and dynamic backdrop to her journey.

As a woman navigating the challenges of both her personal and professional life, Elizabeth Zott is a character who resonates across generations. Her struggles and triumphs are relatable, and the humor injected into some situations makes her journey one you’ll want to follow. The book explores themes of sexual assault, identity, ambition, and the societal expectations placed on women, all while keeping you thoroughly entertained.

So my friends, “Lessons in Chemistry” is a book that takes on the challenges faced by women in the 1960s and beyond. Whether you’re a science enthusiast or just a fan of a good story with a strong, witty female lead, this one’s for you. So, head to your favorite reading spot with a cup of your favorite drink, and immerse yourself in the world of Elizabeth Zott. Happy reading!
