Book Review: This Spells Love by Kate Robb

Hello to my favorite people! I just finished my fall semester and wanted to chat about a delightful book I got last month in my Book of the Month Box, “This Spells Love” by Kate Robb. This is set in a world of love spells, unexpected twists, and a universe of second chances.

So friends, the story kicks off with Gemma with a G, your typical twenty-eight-year-old dealing with the aftermath of a breakup. Instead of drowning her sorrows in a pint of ice cream, or maybe in addition to it, she decides to try a love-cleansing spell with her sister, quirky aunt, and best friend Dax. The only thing she needs to do is seal it with a kiss, which she finally does at the end of the night with Dax to finish the spell. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Gemma wakes up the next morning and realizing she’s not in Kansas anymore, takes a minute or two to figure out where she is and what she’s done. The love spell worked its mojo a bit too well, erasing not only her ex from existence but also rewiring her entire life. And the cherry on top? Dax, her once-best-friend-now-stranger, has no clue who she is.

After some laugh-out-loud moments where Gemma explains shes from a parallel universe, she finds out she needs Dax to give her a smooch to bring back the good ol’ days and to undo the spell. Simple, right? Well, not so much. As Gemma navigates this topsy-turvy parallel universe, she starts feeling more than just friendship for Dax. Cue the “oh no, did the spell mess up my feelings too?” moment.

Kate Robb gives us this friends-to-lovers tale with this witty charm that had me hooked not wanting to put this book down. The chemistry between Gemma and Dax is palpable, and their journey is real and heartwarming. I found myself rooting for them with every page turned.

Kate Robb’s writing style is like catching up with a friend, comfortable, engaging, and sprinkled with humor. The premise might sound a tad fantastical, but the emotions and dilemmas Gemma faces are relatable. Who hasn’t wished to never have met an ex or for a do-over after a breakup, right?

So my friends, “This Spells Love” is a fantastical book full of laughs, surprises, and a touch of magic. Kate Robb, is a fantastic author! I think you’ll agree that this story does not seem like it is her debut novel. It’s a charming escape into a world where love spells aren’t just for fairy tales. If you are in the mood for a romantic comedy with a side of enchantment, add “This Spells Love” to your TBR list. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and funny, and who knows, you might even start believing in a little bit of magic yourself. Happy reading friends!
