Hey there, fellow bookworms and soccer fans! As you can tell I am still in a soccer mood. My beloved soccer team plays on November 8th so I had some time to fit in another book with a soccer theme. I am in the perfect mood to dive into a novel that would complement my love for the beautiful game. What better way to indulge in the synergy of soccer and storytelling than by picking up a copy of ‘The Long Game’ by Elena Armas?
If you’re in the mood for some soccer, especially with the MLS playoffs in full swing, you’re in for a treat. Just like a perfectly executed goal, this book hits all the right notes!
So what’s so great about “The Long Game”? Well, it has masterfully blended the electrifying world of soccer (or football for the non-Americans) with one of my all-time favorite romance tropes, enemies-to-lovers. It’s like taking the best of “Welcome to Wrexham” and “Ted Lasso” and wrapping it up in a story that’s as heartwarming as it is sizzling.
Our leading characters, Adalyn and Cameron, are an absolute delight. Adalyn, facing a viral embarrassment and a daunting breakdown, finds herself managing a soccer team of young girls in a quaint North Carolina town. Her neighbor and the coach, Cameron Caldani, ex-British legendary goalkeeper, is grumpy and hotness personified (seriously, Roy Kent vibes). Their first meeting is a disaster, sparking the kind of hate-at-first-sight dynamic that fuels fiery banter and keeps the pages turning.
But here’s the twist – both Adalyn and Cameron are battling their own inner demons, insecurities, and past traumas. Adalyn is determined to prove herself by turning her young soccer team into a success story, even if it means teaming up with her arch-nemesis. What she doesn’t anticipate is the irresistible attraction that begins to bloom amidst their ongoing rivalry. After all it’s a fine line between love and hate.
What sets this book apart is the depth of the characters and their genuine connection. It’s not just about steamy romance (though that’s definitely there); it’s about two people coming to terms with their vulnerabilities and opening up to each other. Their journey to break down any barriers is heartwarming.
Also, we can not forget the supporting cast, which is an absolute hoot! From Brandy, the blind and socially anxious goat, to San Sebastián, the rooster with nine lives, and the two possessive cats, Willow and Pierogi, they all add layers of charm to this small-town setting. And, of course, there’s the adorably witty little Maria, who comes up with the funniest nicknames for Cameron. She’s a scene-stealer and you’ll love her! I know I did.
This story will make you laugh, cheer for the cast, and leave you yearning for more. The small-town setting is captivating, the characters are unforgettable, and the love story is perfect for you grumpy protagonist lovers out there. This book is a true gem, and Elena Armas, thank you for sharing your incredible talent with the world. We’re eagerly awaiting your next masterpiece! Does that happen to be book 2 in the series? I would love to see more of Matthew and Josie.
So friends, Enjoy your reading journey and may your favorite team triumph in the playoffs, (as long as your favorite team is located in New England)! Happy reading, and go Revs!
